Do dumbells work as pushup bars?

Question by The bowels of the internet: Do dumbells work as pushup bars?
I have several large, hexagon shaped dumbells and I was wondering if I could use them as pushup bars?
Pushup bars are supposed to make a workout more intense.
er…better overall workout.

Yes, but they’ll probably hurt your wrists somewhat. What’s wrong with just doing a regular push-up?

    Yeah they’d work fine.

To switch it up, you can pull one arm completely off the floor when you come up, while still holding the dumbbell.

I use dumbbells all the time as push-up bars and they work great. Using them puts your wrists in a much more neutral position. They also get you off the ground so you have more range of motion allowing you to get more of a stretch as you do your push-ups. This makes the exercise harder, but more effective. You can also elevate your feet a little to increase the intensity even more. When I don’t use bars (or dumbbells) it really hurts my wrists when do very many.
