Arrived on time and worked well, except that the dumbbells are covered in black grease and smell of gasoline. I tried washing them with soap and it no longer leaves the black grease on carpet floors, but the smell remains.

I was very impressed with the quality of these weights when I received them. They are very much like the ones I use at the gym and the grip fits in my hand well without slipping. I decided to purchase these weights (a 5 lb set and an 8 lb set) because they qualified for the super saver shipping on Amazon and ended up costing the same price as cheaper weights with shipping charges. So far I am very happy with my purchase.

These are the same or better than the one I use with my $40/hour trainer at the gym. Fast delivery, too!

Maybe I just got “lucky”, but my 15# weight set is coated with a black greasy substance that comes off on my carpet and hands, even after hosing them off in the backyard. I have these weights sitting on a piece of cardboard in my weight room for now until I can figure out how to remove this black stuff from them. Took a star off for that, but otherwise are excellent dumbbells.

Id probably go with a 3.5 stars right now – could go up or down a point from here.

Ordered these (pair of 12 lb.) with two day prime shipping – they arrived via fed ex overnight the next day. Pretty cool.

    Great looking weights.

However, they don’t appear to be brand new. They have a few nicks in the rubber heads, and there is some debris around where the head meets the handle. Whitish, not sure what it is. Connections of heads to handles is suspect; will have to see how they hold up over time. Also, several nicks in the chrome handles, which appear as black marks. (Im subtracting a point for this.)

The other issue, sure enough : they STINK! Literally. I was kind of expecting this to be the case, since about half of the reviews of the various brands of rubber hex dumbbells on Amazon seem to have the same issue. I did some reading on various exercise related websites to see wht to do about this. The suggestions included cleaning with soap and water, usinf Febreze and putting them out in the sun to let some of the volatile materials cook off. I tried the sun method but didnt seem to do much after two days.

On the plus side, at least they don’t have any greasy coating.

However, Ive had these about a couple of weeks now, and whereas they used to stink up my entire exercise room, now I only smell them when I put my nose near them and try to detect the odor, so it has definitely improved. Not perfect, but I suspect it will fade more over time.

If the odor goes away more, Id give these a 4 star. If not, a 3 star.
