About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.
Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.
Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won’t strain sensitive joints.

I just purchased this unit from Amazon. The hardware is of excellent quality. The frame members all very robust.I did have alignment problems with frame bolt holes.
I pulled it into alignment with a block of wood and a large c clamp. One person can assemble the unit if you do a little planning. The assembly manual was very good compared to most products these days. The unit is very quiet and smooth.
Now the operations manual is another story. It is just about useless. Why would an old line USA company put its name on crap? I want to use the built in programs.
I managed to get them up once and I am not sure how I did that. The finest equipment in the world is useless without a GOOD manual. Also I did not see a parts list. Someday something WILL need to be replaced.
I am not surprised at all. Its become common place to get products that are substandard in some way.

We bought this machine from Sports Authority to get an elliptical for the apartment and it was fairly easy to put together with two people. However, it stopped working after we turned it on twice. We didn’t even get a chance to work out on it before the console wouldn’t turn on, the very same day we bought it nonetheless.
We had to take the thing apart and still aren’t sure what’s wrong with it. Our theory is that the upper wire is broken, so we called Schwinn customer service to try and get a replacement part last week. We called again a week later and they still haven’t ordered the part because they don’t have a part number for it. So, now we have to wait a week for them get a part number and another week for them to ship the part…and we aren’t even 100% sure that it’s that part that’s broken!
We may return the machine because our experience with Schwinn customer service and the machine itself have been abysmal so far..and we haven’t even used the elliptical yet.

I’ve had this elliptical for a few month now and I am really enjoying it.It is a very smooth and quiet machine, even when my husband uses it.I am up to 25 min workouts at a slow to medium pace and it really gets your heart rate up quickly. I have been feeling so much better just using it twice a week.I highly recommend this elliptical,I did not give it 5 stars because there is no place for a water bottle or ipod and the screen does not light up but other then that its a great workout.

I am an “over 70″ diabetic who needs to exercise daily-the Schwinn 420 is a great buy for an entry level machine and beyond – I don’t think I’d have to up-grade at all – I also have a Schwinn Recumbent Stationary Bike, so between the two machines plus a daily regimen of good food, my diabetes is under control, and, I’ve made my doctor happy as well !!!
